Description: Meissen hamadryas baboon first modelled by Max Esser in 1925 for a series of 75 models known as Reynard the Fox. Reynard the Fox was the central animal in a series of loosely connected animal fables which were popular in mediaeval Europe. The whole series was created by Max Esser between 1920 and 1928. This model is decorated with a highly stylised use of orange and gold very redolent of the Art Deco period.   This example c.1925. Illustrated on page 535 of The Art of Meissen figures by Bergmann.

Mark Info: Crossed swords in under gaze blue with dot, on top of base by tail of monkey, also in same area impressed M Esser 1925 and inscribed M Esser 1925 in gold. On underside of base impressed monogram for the Reynard the fox series. Incised model number H 255.
