Description: |
Meissen hamadryas baboon first modelled by Max Esser in 1925 for a series of 75 models known as Reynard the Fox. Reynard the Fox was the central animal in a series of loosely connected animal fables which were popular in mediaeval Europe. The whole series was created by Max Esser between 1920 and 1928. This model is decorated with a highly stylised use of orange and gold very redolent of the Art Deco period. This example c.1925. Illustrated on page 535 of The Art of Meissen figures by Bergmann. |
